ABC Celebrates Earth Day

Join ABC in celebrating Earth Day by implementing ten easy steps that you can take today to help the environment. Read more about ABC and Earth Day.

Reuse canvas or cloth bags for shopping to avoid using plastic bags.
Use compact florescent light (CFL) bulbs rather than standard incandescent bulbs to save money on electric bills and reduce the use of fossil fuels.
Unplug electronics, cell phone chargers and battery chargers when not in use to save energy and money. Even when these items are turned off, they still draw electricity.
Recycle aluminum cans, plastic bottles and paper. Contact your local municipality to learn how to recycle items such as plastic bags, batteries, cell phones, motor oil, light bulbs, etc.
Shop locally for food items to support sustainable agriculture and reduce fuel consumption required for transporting food from distant locations.
Use reusable water bottles or install a water filter in your faucet to avoid buying bottled water.
Save trees and postage by paying bills online and cancelling paper statements and junk mail.
Conserve fuel by turning down the heat at night and while you are away from your home — or install a programmable thermostat.
Use non toxic cleaning products to avoid exposure to unsafe chemicals found in commercial cleaning products.
Conserve water by turning it off while brushing your teeth, doing only full loads of laundry and dishes and installing efficient shower heads and faucets. Lower the temperature of your water heater to 120 degrees and wash your clothes in cold water. 90% of the energy used by washing machines goes to heating water.
